If you sound is on, you are listening to “Goodbye, World, Goodbye”
Rev. 6:12-17 “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?”
The Sixth Chapter of The Revelation is a chapter of outlines. It summarizes everything that is going to happen on earth between the time of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His return. The spread of Western Civilization over the earth is outlined with the removal of the first four seals in Rev. 6:1-11, showing the religious, economic, and political forces that are going shape the world during this time. The spread of these forces over the Earth is covered in the previous pages in the Mos Maiorum Section of back2thebible.org where you are now reading . The vision shown to John under the fifth seal is an outline of the time in which we are now living. This vision is discussed on the the Fifth Seal page. And the verses quoted above outline God’s Judgment that is going to fall upon the Earth as a result of mankind’s abuse of the Freedom that He has given us.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God.!
Matt. 24:7-34 and Rev. 6:12-17 coincide almost exactly with each other concerning the major events that are going to be coming upon the Earth as the End of the Age nears. The two passages are about the same broad and general time and events, but the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24 is specifically about the Sign of His return and the End of the Age, while the vision in Revelation 6:12-17 is specifically about the judgment of earth that is coincident with his return. The earthquakes are mentioned in Matthew 24:7; they are part of the list of events that begin to destroy the structure of Babylon before Jesus returns.
The word that is translated as “great” in Rev. 6:12 is “megas.” Megas has a variety of senses, all of which mean something that is big, or huge, or many, or high, etc. In this case, it could have just as easily been translated as many instead of a great. When understood to mean many earthquakes the passage then becomes completely compatible with what Jesus said in the Twenty Fourth Chapter of Matthew concerning this time, for Jesus has said in prior verses in Matthew chapter 24 that there would be earthquakes in various places before his return. Both passages can, therefore, be seen to be in agreement, and both refer to the same time: i.e. the time period just before and during his return to earth. Therefore, we can see that the events of Revelation 6:12-17 are a summary or preview of the things which Jesus talked about in the 24th Chapter of Matthew and which he revealed to John in greater detail in the visions of The Revelation as the 6th and 7th seals were opened to his view.
