Matt. 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son  of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Jesus said that a sign would appear in the heavens immediately after the time of the Great Tribulation (See the page Great Tribulation). Earlier, Jesus said that before the great tribulation would begin, the Gospel would be preached in all the world for a witness to all nations. Then He said the great tribulation would begin when the church saw the Abomination of Desolation of which Daniel prophesied standing in the Holy Place--Matt. 24:14 And this gospel of  the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. 15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Jesus told us that the sun would be darkened, the moon will not shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken immediately after the great tribulation. Those are all signs that will be impossible to miss. They are taken from the Old Testament Prophets, Solomon (Eccl. 12:2) , Isaiah, (Isa. 13:10), and Joel (Joel 3:15). Jesus said that the Sign of the Son of Man would appear in heaven at the time when the sun has been darkened, the moon is not shining, the stars are falling from heaven, and the powers of the heavens are being shaken. So what could be His sign that will appear in heaven? When Jesus was born His star appeared in the Heavens for a considerable length of time - long enough for the Magi to travel from somewhere in the East, probably Persia, to Bethlehem. The star remained in the heavens for over two years considering the time between Jesus’ birth and the time that the Magi appeared in Bethlehem. It seems quite probable to me that this same star will be The Sign of the Son of Man, and that it is going to reappear again just prior to Jesus’ return to earth.

For the wise men to have followed the star for about two years, and then see it finally appear over the house where Jesus lived, it has to have been some kind of large comet or meteor that approached earth from beyond our solar system at first, and was probably only clearly visible at first in the east just before sun rise. As the star got closer and closer to earth it would have appeared higher and higher in the heavens at sunrise and then be lost to view the rest of the day by the light of the sun.  After following the star for two years, we are told that the wise men observed it over the house where Jesus lived. That is to say, it reached its zenith exactly over the house in Bethlehem. We are not given any additional details about the star after it served its purpose, but most likely what happened is that after it reached zenith it simply disappeared from view during the morning because the Western Hemisphere of earth was no longer facing its direction except during the daylight hours when the sunlight was too bright for it to be observed. But the next time this star appears we are told that the sun will be darkened so it will be observable from every place on earth during the whole course of a day.

Whatever the Sign of the Son of Man really turns out to be, Jesus said that all the tribes (ethnic groups) of earth will mourn when it appears. So we must ask ourselves, “What is so distressing to all peoples on earth that they will mourn when they see it?” It seems probable to me that they know that it is going to hit earth this time,  The events described in Rev. 8:10-13 exactly match with what Jesus said in Matt. 24:29-30 quoted above. Rev. 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; 11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. 12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
